The 30’s Will Be Our Decade

keep-calm-you-re-in-your-30-s-girlI was not looking forward to my 30’s.  Not by a long shot.  Candra wasn’t either.  I think she cried and bitched more than I did and more than I have ever heard anyone else just for turning 30.  However, it is shaping up to be an okay decade.

My 30th birthday was the absolute greatest!  I worked for a college and my co-workers and students got together and made it perfect.  They decorated my office, a few students got me a cake, and they put together a box where my students wrote little notes to me.  I was overwhelmed and really moved.  In addition, my mom and I spent time getting pedicures and my brothers came to visit me in Florence, SC.  To top it off, I spent a weekend with my bestie Candra, my dad chip and my evil step mother Deb in Gaitlinburg, TN.  (She’s not really evil, I actually love her to death).  Just so you know, we visited The Ole Smokey Distillery, The Apple Barn, Davy Crockett’s Whiskey and more.

Actually the only BAD thing that happened was I decided to get a perm and had a bad reaction and half of my hair fell out.  Lol but other than that…it was PERFECT!

Candra and I have talked about it over and over again and she’s had issues with the 30’s.  The number of it I think bothers her.  But…does she really REMEMBER our 20’s?  I do…let’s recap:

  • We were away from each other for 90% of it due to deployments, lapse in judgements and one of us met the man of our dreams and moved away….clearly not me.
  • We made a lot of dumb decisions
  • I graduated college…found out I couldn’t have kids…my parents were diagnosed with cancer…I became estranged from a family member…etc…
  • She had a beautiful daughter…moved away from her family and friends…and some other yucky stuff we will just acknowledge with a 🙂

Now…let’s visit our 30’s…

  • We are both back in the same city
  • I get to see my niece and her weekly
  • We are both more able to deal with losing friends…not each other
  • She’s GONNA BE A NURSE in like a MONTH
  • Her and her husband built a beautiful home
  • I’m back into volunteering, started taking my blog seriously and finally planned to visit Italy
  • We can no longer stomach Jager
  • But we can down some red wine…with a little bit of ibprofen

I mean obviously there’s a lot more to it than that…but I am learning more and more that this is going to be our decade.  I am so excited about my 30’s and my future and at 31, I am anxious to see what’s  next.  I came across this list on Courtney’s blog over at Eat, Pray, Run DC of things she wanted to do before she was 30…I was really excited that I had done many of them so I’m gonna share the list.

How many of these have you done?  Anything you want to do before your next birthday?

  1. Jump out of a plane. – Done it 3 times…
  2. Run a half marathon. – Yo this is a Fat Girl Friendly Blog…we don’t run…yet…
  3. Use my passport.  – Well I have visited 12 different countries while in the military, but never used a passport…plan to do that next year…this is on the to do list.
  4. Take part in meaningful volunteer work. – DONE DONE and DONE
  5. Find a new karaoke go to song – Um…I don’t do this willingly…I’ve only done it once…for charity…and it was to an Eminem song…I think it was Without Me…complete with backup singers…yea that happened
  6. Stick to a budget. – I do well on my spreadsheet but need to do better….to do list.
  7. Try one new restaurant a month.  – Not on this level, but I try new places a lot.
  8. Make one new recipe a month week. – Considering I didn’t learn to cook until after I turned 30, I definitely didn’t achieve this.
  9. Take a surfing class.  – Too scared to do this….lol
  10. Go skiing.  – Nope…this either….
  11. Road trip like I mean it. – Candra and I always have the best road trips, but I would love to take one without a destination in mind.  To do list.
  12. Start my own urban garden.  – Nope, great idea!
  13. Perfect my biscuit recipe.  – Not fat girl friendly…lol
  14. Cook a five course meal.  – Nope, to do list.
  15. Stay up and watch the sun rise. – Some of my best memories are of doing just this…
  16. Learn to change a tire. – Got it…
  17. Make something (a scarf, a shelf, etc.) and display it or give it as a gift. – Oh yes…check!
  18. See two great museums in NYC – oh I need to visit NYC again!
  19. Clean my apartment at least once a week. – Does it count if my mom does it?  To do list!
  20. Take a trip with my mother.  – We’ve taken little ones and big cruise in January 2014!
  21. Live car free for a month. – God if only!  You can tell Courtney is in DC! Totally NOT doable in SC.
  22. Take a weekend trip – solo! – I actually LOVE to do things alone…but never a weekend trip…great idea!
  23. Have a sleepover with my niece. – We do it a lot…we call it Vault night…everything that happens or is talked about goes in the vault and it’s fair game. Love that kid!
  24. Find a church in DC. – Hmm…a bit of a tricky subject here…so let’s stick a pin in it and save it for later.
  25. Send at least five hand written letters to friends/family. – Candra and I send letters all the time as well as Granny and I.  Handwritten letters are so under rated!
  26. Write (creatively) every day for a month. – Admirable goal! 2 do list!
  27. Have a housewarming/cocktail party! – Yea…lol no….
  28. Do a random, anonymous act of kindness for a stranger. – I try to do it as much as I can…done.
  29. Try a new fitness activity.  – I tried Zumba b4 30…hated it.
  30. Plan an AWESOME 30th birthday party – I didn’t plan it, but my friends did and it was awesome!

Thanks for the list Courtney!

I’ve more than halfway through my 30s and they aren’t too bad yet. I’ve never had a passport though, and that kinds stinks. I’ve never needed one.

Rabia – I’ve actually never had a passport either (all my traveling was through the Army) but plan to get one this year and take a trip to Italy next. Maybe when the kids get a little older you can plan a trip where you will HAVE to have a passport. 🙂 And I think maybe Ireland should be your first stop. Spent 3 hours (or so) there once on a layover and it was fun just sitting at the bar…lol.

My list would be really different for things to do this year… interesting idea to make one. 30s are okay. I turn 34 this summer. Not loving my five snow white hairs or the increasing number of products it takes to maintain myself, but I think it’s time to take some wisdom from my grandma who always said, “better old than dead.” Then she would cackle wildly. She lived to be 89, so I always figured she would know!

Megan it truly has been awesome. I was a little nervous because I was thinking you were supposed to have it all figured out…but I realized that’s not true. You just stop worrying so much about other people and trivial things and focus on living your life…your way. You will love it!

I want to remember this as I get closer to 30. Most people I’ve talked to have actually enjoyed their 30’s much better than their 20’s because they had their stuff together!
