So…Why Fat Girl Friendly?

So…Why Fat Girl Friendly?

clhughey

Several people have commented on or asked me why I called my little slice of the world “Fat girl Friendly”.  It started out innocently enough in fact.

There used to not be a lot of options for plus size women.  You either had to buy the grandma looking clothes from Walmart or take out a loan for Lane Bryant.  Then, plus size clothing started to become a little itty bitty section in Belk or Goody’s.  However, they didn’t call it plus size…they had all these crazy names for plus size.

Untitled-1Honestly…I got tired of trying to decipher which store called me which name.  I figured “Hey…EVERYONE knows what fat means”.  So I figured I was looking for clothes that were my size…and friendly to my figure…so I gave it a whirl.

“Excuse me ma’am, can you tell me where your Fat Girl Friendly clothes are?”

She looked puzzled, laughed and directed me to whatever crazy name they called that section.  HEY success!  I got what I needed without feeling like a tool bag AND she laughed…bonus!  I tried it at different stores and in different ways.

“That table is NOT fat girl friendly”

“Do you have any fat girl friendly towels?”

And it just took off.  Most people laugh and think it’s cute.  I am just not that sensitive about the word because hey…it is fat…whatever dude.  I’ve been called fat my whole life…good job you know a 3 letter word that means a natural oily or greasy substance.  You’re a winner bro.  So I mean if I use it…you really can’t bother me.  I know what I am…and I deal with it in my own way.

I hope I don’t offend any fat women with the use of the word…I know not everyone is comfortable with it and not everyone identifies with it.  That’s totally ok…I identify with any of them.

Now ya know!

  1. You know I’ve struggled with my weight my ENTIRE life. I’ve written about it as well. So, I’ve always loved the name and knew exactly what it meant.

hahaha! I remember the first time you came over and asked if I had any fat girl friendly towels! Bout spit out my coffee!

  3. I love your confidence level! And I love that you’re able to just say what you are. There are a lot of strange phrases for being short too, haha. Just say it like it is!

I sure have you fooled! Lol my confidence level is…eh…minimal but…my “I don’t care what you think” level is pretty high. 🙂 My cousin Hailey is short too and tells me all the time that people pick on her. I watched a funny short about short people one time and the guy said “People will make jokes, you make jokes too”. So, that’s what I do. And then the word fat just stopped bothering me.

Love it! I think the most bizarre term is Queen Sized. I haven’t seen it since the 80’s, but it makes me laugh because it doesn’t make any sense. Enjoyed your blog name explanation.

OMG I totally forgot about queen sized! It is…weird. I see them mostly on hose or on lingerie. I mean, I would love to be a queen…lol but calling me queen size makes me feel all mattressy. 🙂
